Best for: the highest rate

Worth knowing

  • Your money is locked away until the fixed term ends.
Our take · Jan Watermann, Co-Founder

Aldermore's 15 Month Fixed Rate Cash ISA pays 4.85%, which sits above the cash ISA market average but still 0.40% behind the category leader at 5.25%, so it is a solid mid-table pick rather than the best available. With CPI at 3.1% as of Aug 2026, the rate delivers a real return of 1.75% above inflation, which is a reasonable outcome for cautious savers.

The main catch is the £20,000 cap on deposits and the fact that your money is locked away for 15 months with no access. Transfers in are accepted, which makes it worth considering if you want to consolidate existing ISA balances.

Worth knowing

  • Your money is locked away until the fixed term ends.
Our take · Jan Watermann, Co-Founder

Paragon's 15 Month Fixed Rate Cash ISA at 4.75% sits above the Cash ISA market average, though it trails the category leader by 0.50%, who pays 5.25%. At 1.65% above August 2026 CPI of 3.1%, it does at least beat inflation in real terms.

The account accepts transfers in and works as a flexible ISA, which is useful.

The genuine catch is the early exit penalty: 120 days' interest, meaning closure in the first four months could return less than you deposited. Aldermore offers a comparable 15 Month Fixed Rate Cash ISA at 4.85%.

You need at least £1,000 to open it. £10,000 left in over the 19 months would earn about £754.

Worth knowing

  • Your money is locked away until the fixed term ends.
Our take · Jan Watermann, Co-Founder

Secure Trust Bank's 18 Month Fixed Rate Cash ISA pays 4.70%, which sits above the cash ISA market average but is 0.55% behind the category leader at 5.25%, so it is a decent but not outstanding pick.

That said, 4.70% does beat August 2026 CPI of 3.1% by 1.60%, meaning your money grows in real terms. The account accepts transfers in and needs just £1,000 to open, making it accessible for most savers looking to shelter a lump sum from tax.

The main catch is the early access charge of 120 days' interest if you need your money before 24 May 2028.

Good to know

The details that change what a fixed ISA pays you.

Is fixing for longer worth it?

4.37%

three-month fixed ISA rate needed in October 2027 to match

Or fix for one year at 4.97% and go again in October 2027. To come out level, that next fix would need to pay at least 4.37%.

The shorter fix already pays as much, so only fix longer if you expect rates below 4.37%.

ISA or bond after tax?

6.22%

a bond must pay to beat this ISA (basic rate; 8.36% higher rate)

Before tax, the best 18-month bond pays 0.27 percentage points more than this ISA. It only wins while your interest stays tax-free: about £19,500 saved for basic-rate taxpayers, £9,700 for higher-rate.

No 18-month bond pays 6.22% right now.

The cash ISA limit is changing

£12,000

cash ISA limit for under-65s from 6 April 2027

It caps new money only, not what you already hold. Over-65s keep £20,000 (GOV.UK).

A fix opened now ends in January 2028. Rolling it into another ISA is a transfer, so it won't count towards the £12,000.

Flexible ISAs

2 of 3

are flexible

Take money out and put it back in the same tax year without using more allowance. The exit penalty usually still applies.

The top rate is flexible too: Aldermore at 4.85%.

Moving an existing ISA

3 of 3

accept transfers in

Ask the new provider to move it for you. Withdraw it yourself and it loses its ISA status.

A hard term to find

3

on sale right now

Most providers fix for 1, 2, 3 or 5 years, so other terms come and go. Nearest: 1 year at 4.97% and 2 years at 5.08%.

Before you open one

Quick checks that save you money later.

  1. Transfer, don't withdraw

Ask the new provider to move your old ISA. Withdrawing it yourself loses the tax wrapper.

  2. Check the minimum

0 of these ISAs open from £1. The rest need £500 to £1,000.

  3. Diary January 2028

At maturity most providers move your money into a variable ISA paying much less. Set a rate alert.

  4. One FSCS limit per banking licence

That's £120,000 across every account you hold under the same banking licence, ISA or not.
