The easiest way to waste money abroad is still the airport bureau. The second-easiest is a UK card that quietly adds a 2.75% or 2.99% foreign-transaction fee on every tap.
A decent travel card — debit or credit — uses a proper Visa or Mastercard rate and charges little or nothing extra. The table below is live. It ranks free UK cards by what £1,000 actually buys in euros today, not by marketing copy.
If you already hold one of these — or you're shopping around — start with the overall best free cards for the United Kingdom.
Both can be excellent for spending. They are not the same product.
If you want a card purely to spend abroad, a fee-free debit card is usually enough. If you already put everyday spend on a credit card, pick one that does not charge extra outside the UK — and still take a debit card for cash.
These are the strongest free debit cards and plans on today's euro rate. Paid plans (the ones that cost £10–£15 a month) are hidden here, same as on our travel card comparison.
Credit cards in this list are ranked the same way: what your pounds buy, after the issuer fee. A “0% FX” badge is not enough on its own — some cards still sit on a weaker Visa or Mastercard wholesale rate than others.
Rates move. The tables on this page update with the same live Visa, Mastercard and provider feeds we use on the travel comparison — so a guide from last summer does not quietly go stale. If you want the method in full, see how we compare travel cards.
