Our Expert Opinion on HSBC MySavings

Jonny PeaseCo-Founder, DepositScout

This account is aimed at children and pays 3.75% on balances up to £3,000, which clears CPI inflation of 3.1% by 0.65 percentage points, so the money is at least growing in real terms. The genuine catch is the tiered structure: anything above £3,000 earns only 1.10%, so a larger balance is penalised quite sharply. I would keep deposits at or below £3,000 to make the rate worthwhile, and if HSBC is not a priority, Nottingham Building Society's Young Savers' Club matches the 3.75% and is worth comparing.
